Summer seems to be the time when many of us are most prone to take a road trip, and even though striking out on a random excursion can be exciting, it does have one obvious downside: driving makes us tired. Sometimes, it makes us dangerously tired. So how can you stay alert while driving? Here are some tips to keep from getting tired in the car, from your friends here at EVS Auto Group.

How to Keep from Getting Tired While Driving

Food and Liquids

Although snacks and drinks can sometimes be a moderate distraction while driving, the added activity is proven to help keep drivers alert as well. Energy drinks are always an option, but tangy foods — things that are tart or spicy — tend to work even better. Eat slowly to make it last, and drink beverages slowly. Sugary foods sometimes make drivers tired, but snacks that engage a person, such as sunflower seeds, work wonders toward keeping drivers alert.

Warmer temps tend to make us drowsy, while cold blasts do the opposite. Keep wet cloths in your car to wipe on your face intermittently, since this will refresh you as well. It also doesn’t hurt to open the windows here and there, or to even pull over and take a few laps around the car to get the blood flowing.

Engage Yourself With Music

You’ll generally be listening to music while you drive, but how does it work toward keeping you awake? Some have suggested that it’s best to listen to music that you actively dislike, since that is less soothing to a driver. Singalong songs also work well, since they give you a part in the process. Also, if you’re someone who enjoys information or stories, podcasts or audiobooks can be a help as well.

Stay Active

The best way to keep from surrendering from creeping tiredness is to use your own energy to fight it. Keep your eyes moving, move your hands and arms around, roll your neck around, and put your seat in a position that you normally wouldn’t. Make a phone call if you feel your focus slipping. Turn off the cruise control, since this allows you to be lazy.

Obviously, if none of the above tasks work to make you wake up, it’s best to find somewhere to get some shuteye. We hope that these tips help keep you safe this summer, and that you’ll come see us soon at one of our EVS Auto Group locations!
