For longtime residents of Wisconsin, our illustrious automotive and motorsports history is not a surprise by any means. However, if you’re visiting from far-off lands, you might be a little shocked to know all the history right at your fingertips. For that reason, we’ve put together a short list of some of our favorite motor vehicle museums to be found near Milwaukee, WI, covering planes, trains, automobiles, and everything in between.

Best Motor Vehicle Museums in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Automotive Museum — Hartford, WI

Located just 45 minutes northwest of Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Automotive Museum seems like a good place to start. Set inside an old cannery along Hwy 60, the non-profit museum was started in 1986 with about 45 cars, and now keeps a collection of roughly 110 vehicles. The Southeastern Wisconsin Short Track Hall of Fame on site, which commemorates the history of regional racing in the area.

Harley-Davidson Museum — Milwaukee, WI

Obviously, Harley-Davidson really needs no introduction. It’s so instrumental to the history of Wisconsin in general, and Milwaukee in particular, that it would be a crime against all common sense if there wasn’t a museum. Fortunately, this one is absolutely stunning, with exhibits spanning decades of progress and featuring more than 450 motorcycles and artifacts. It’s truly not one to be missed.

National Railroad Museum — Green Bay, WI

In the early days of western expansion, no mobile vessel was as crucial the railway. But where can you really get the full experience of what it was like during the golden era of life on the rails? At the National Railroad Museum, you can enjoy exhibits featuring items on the famed Pullman Porters and Dwight D. Eisenhower A4 rail car, among many others.

EAA AirVenture Museum — Oshkosh, WI

For those of us who grew up dreaming of flying the friendly skies, the EAA Museum in Oshkosh is all of our childhood fantasies come to life. With iconic featured aircraft such as a 1944 Mustang, a Spirit of St. Louis Replica, and a 1938 Bugatti 100 Racer, there are all sorts of terrific and historic items to keep your attention piqued.
