There are two types of garage door openers: rolling code and fixed code. We’ve laid out a step-by-step guide for both types of openers.
Here’s how to program your Ford F-150 garage door opener.
Programming Your F-150 Homelink® Garage Door Opener
Rolling code and fixed code are programmed the same way. However, rolling code openers require a few extra steps. If you don’t know what kind of opener you have, that’s okay. It will become clear as you program the opener. You may need a ladder and an extra set of hands if you have rolling code opener.
- Either turn on your F-150 or put it in Accessory Mode (electronics and gauges on but engine off).
- Hold your old garage door remote next the Homelink® buttons in your F-150
- Simultaneously press the “Open” button on your old remote and the Homelink® button you want to open your garage door; hold both buttons until the Homelink® indicator light on your F-150 changes from a slow blink to a fast blink.
- Release the Homelink® button.
- Press and hold the Homelink® button you want to open your garage door for 5 seconds. You garage door should open. If it doesn’t, repeat this step again.
- The Homelink® indicator light may stay a solid color. If it does, you’re finished. However, if it flashes rapidly, you have a rolling code opener, and a few more steps are required.
Rolling Code Extra Steps
The following steps need to be completed within 30 seconds. This is where the ladder and a helper come in, if necessary. Some garage door brands will require you to hold down the button on your old remote for the following steps.
- Press and hold the “Learn” button on outside of the garage door motor unit for a 3-5 seconds, depending on the motor.
- Back in your F-150, press and hold the same Homelink® button you were for steps 1-6 for 2 seconds. Release it.
- Repeat rolling code step 2 for a second time. Some brands may require one additional repetition, meaning you’d perform rolling code step 2 three times in a row.
- Your F-150 Homelink® opener should now be programmed.
